FAQ Regarding ACT/SAT Writing Scores

Beginning with freshman applicants for Summer/Fall 2010, The University of Alabama will require the writing section of either the ACT or SAT test. As we continue to use a holistic approach to review each applicant, the writing component will offer further insight into a student's readiness for college level work.

Why is the writing section required?

As we continue to use a holistic approach to review each applicant, the writing component will offer further insight into a student's readiness for college level work.

If I took the ACT before learning that UA would require the writing section, will UA honor the previous composite test score that does not include the writing section?

The highest composite ACT score will be honored even if the test did not include the writing portion. The student will still need the writing section. This can be fulfilled by taking the writing section the next time the student takes the ACT.

If I have already registered to take the ACT and did not sign up for the writing section, should I take the test or cancel and reschedule when the writing section can be included?

Students should proceed with standardized tests they have signed up to take. The highest composite ACT score will be honored, but the student will still need the writing section.

If I have previously taken the ACT without the writing section, then take it with the writing section and score lower than the previous score, will UA honor the higher score even though it did not have the writing section?

The highest composite test score will be used for admissions and scholarship purposes to UA. For example:

  • ACT test taken without the writing section: composite score of four main areas: 28
  • ACT test with the writing section: composite score of four main areas: 25

* UA will honor the composite score of 28.

Can I take the writing test by itself, without taking the multiple-choice tests?

No. At this time, the ACT does not provide the option of taking only the writing test. To take the writing test, you must complete the 4 multiple-choice sections during the same session.

What if I have already taken the writing portion of the SAT? Am I required to submit writing scores for the ACT as well?

The SAT has three sections: Math, Critical Reading, and Writing. UA uses a combined score from the Math and Critical Reading sections when determining admissions. For Summer/Fall 2010 freshman applications, if a student takes the SAT, he or she would not be required to take the ACT with a writing section.
