Beginning with freshman applicants for Summer/Fall 2010, The University of Alabama will require the writing section of either the ACT or SAT test. The highest composite ACT score will be honored even if the test did not include the writing portion. The student will still need the writing section. This can be fulfilled by taking the writing section the next time the student takes the ACT.

No. At this time, the ACT does not provide the option of taking only the writing test. To take the writing test, you must complete the 4 multiple-choice sections during the same session.
The SAT has three sections: Math, Critical Reading, and Writing. UA uses a combined score from the Math and Critical Reading sections when determining admissions. For Summer/Fall 2010 freshman applications, if a student takes the SAT, he or she would not be required to take the ACT with a writing section.
