  • Students interested in transferring for the fall semester should have their applications complete (with official transcripts) by April 1.
  • Students interested in transferring for the spring semester should have their applications complete (with official transcripts) by mid-December.

Yes. Orientation sessions for transfer students are required and include registration for the first semester's classes, placement testing, and seminars on UA policies, procedures, and services. Sessions are offered several times each year. Students receive registration materials upon admission. See the Bama Bound website for more information.

Does the University have a residency requirement for transfer students?

Yes. One-fourth of the semester hours required for your degree, including 9 of the last 18, must be earned in residence at the University. Any UA college or school may specify that advanced work in your major and minor field be taken in residence.

How can I find someone to talk to about my major or write to a UA academic department?

If the academic department in which you are interested has a home page, look there. You can start with our Undergraduate Programs and Majors lists—they link to academic departmental home pages, where you can find information about programs and often an e-mail link or phone number for a contact person. If you don't see a link to what you're looking for in either of the program listings, use the guide below to get started in the right direction, or contact Undergraduate Admissions via e-mail at admissions@ua.edu or by phone at (205) 348-5666 or 1-800-933-BAMA.

How do I find information about transferring from a state community college?

Visit the STARS website for answers to all of your questions.

Is there a limit to the amount of two-year college work I can transfer?

Yes. Students from two-year colleges may transfer a maximum of 64 semester hours (96 quarter hours). This means you should expect to take at least 64 semester hours at The University of Alabama to complete degree requirements. Some colleges and schools may require more—contact your academic division's advising center or dean's office for details.

How do you convert quarter hours to semester hours?

Multiply the quarter hours by two-thirds to convert to semester hours. For example: 5 quarter hours = 3 1/3 semester hours.

When will I know which courses will transfer to The University of Alabama?

Your transcript will be sent to your academic division when you are admitted. An official evaluation of credits will be mailed to you by the registrar of your UA academic division.

Can any of the credit I transfer fulfill Core Curriculum requirements?

Yes. All core requirements, except the 6 semester hours of writing courses, can be transferred from two-year or four-year colleges. The writing requirements must be taken at The University of Alabama during your junior or senior year. We prefer that those writing courses be taken in your major or minor academic field.

What kinds of career planning and placement services does UA offer?

All kinds. From aptitude/personality tests to resumé services and on-campus interviews, UA's Career Center works with students to help them find the careers they want. We encourage our students to start planning from the very first semester, so contact the Career Center early.

What kinds of services are available for students with physical or learning disabilities?

The University of Alabama is committed to making its programs and services accessible to all qualified students—and we accomplish that through a wide variety of support programs and services. Check out the Center for Teaching and Learning and Office of Disability Services, two of our campus centers for disability-related accommodations and support.

What if I need special help with my coursework? What kinds of programs are available?

Contact the Center for Teaching and Learning—visit their website, or call (205) 348-5175. Through CTL, UA students receive individualized counseling and instruction and have access to tutors, special review sessions and videotaped lectures for some classes, workshops on study skills and time management, and more.
