International Admissions — Enrollment Checklist

The following are required in order for your application to The University of Alabama to be complete:

  • Non-refundable application fee of US $30 online (or $35 paper).
  • Completed application. The completed application and all requirements should be submitted before the deadline for each term:
    Fall — May 1
    Spring — October 1
    Summer — March 1
  • Complete and return the Information for Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Student Status (PDF).
  • Submit the Certification of Finances (PDF) and a bank letter for evidence of financial support (see enclosed instructions). Proof of financial support must be received and approved before an I-20 will be issued.
  • FRESHMAN APPLICANTS: Certified, translated transcripts of marksheets (Grades 9 through completion) together with photocopies of examination results, degrees, diplomas, or certificates awarded. Copies must be certified by a public or school official.
  • TRANSFER APPLICANTS: Request an official, translated transcript to be sent from each college or university you have attended. If you have less than one year of college work, it is necessary to send a certified copy of your secondary credentials. Any applicant with post-secondary study completed outside the United States is encouraged to submit those credentials for a course-by-course evaluation to World Education Services, Bowling Green Station, P.O. Box 5087, New York, NY 10274-5087 or on the web at www.wes.org. This evaluation along with a course syllabus may expedite the decision to grant transfer credit. Evaluations received from credential evaluation agencies other than WES are subject to approval by the academic division reviewing transfer credit.
  • All non-native speakers of English must provide proof of language proficiency by meeting one of the following options:
    1. Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)—Minimum score of 173 computer-based, 500 paper-based or 61 Internet-based. Official score should be sent to The U of A, Tuscaloosa, AL, institution code 1830.
    2. The College Board APIEL score of 3 or the IELTS score of 6.0.
    3. Students who study in our English Language Institute (ELI) may meet the language requirement by earning the Proficiency Certificate from that program.
    4. Applicants may request an ELI-Conditional admission. Students who do not provide a satisfactory language test result by registration will enroll for full time language study with our English Language Institute.
    5. Students transferring from another U.S. institution may substitute completion of credit English Composition 101 and 102 with "C" or better for the TOEFL.

Athletes are not eligible for C nor D.

  • Students attending college or high school in the U.S. should ask your International Student Adviser to complete and return the Transfer Recommendation of Student's Nonimmigrant Status (PDF). Admission may be delayed until received.
  • Official SAT or ACT score report, if available. These test results are helpful for scholarship consideration and are required for U.S. high school graduates. NOTE: FRESHMAN ATHLETES MUST SUBMIT OFFICIAL ACT or SAT SCORES FOR ALL TESTS TAKEN.
  • ATHLETES ONLY: Complete and return the educational background form.

The general scholarship application is available at scholarships.ua.edu. You should submit this application if you would like to be considered for scholarships. The deadline for entering freshmen is December 1 and for transfer students is January 15. A paper version of the application can be requested by contacting international@ua.edu.

Prospective international athletes should note that the admission process to The University of Alabama and the NCAA Initial Eligibility Clearinghouse certification process are separate and handled by separate areas. This will require the duplication of information.

Students interested in the English Language Institute (ELI) should note that courses from the ELI are not part of the academic program. You may apply directly to the ELI for intensive language study. Students granted ELI Conditional admission may be required to enroll in the ELI prior to beginning an academic program.

It is to your advantage to submit as many of these materials as you can in one package. Every effort will be made to expedite the processing of your application. Upon receipt, the materials will be carefully evaluated and a decision concerning your admission will be made. Sending these materials to The University of Alabama does not constitute admission. Notification of admission will be made by an official letter of acceptance.
